Rooting Hair Tutorial
Hair rooting is the process of inserting hair directly into the “scalp” of the doll.
The supplies you need are:
Hank of hair (I use pearl moon doll hair bountifulbaby.com)
I small needle with tip clipped off
smoothing brush
smoothing tool
Here is a close-up of the needle
#1 place your head on a stand. Make sure the neck is securely attached as you will be pushing on the top of the scalp. Please note the doll is NOT fired.
#2 cover face and neck with plastic. The reason for this is there will be millions of tiny floating hairs and you don’t want your sculpture ruined.
#3 with your sculpting tool make tiny dots about where you want the hairline to be. Do not make a solid line! This will be hard to smooth out later.
#4 pick up a very small clump of hair. The secret to a realistic effect is keeping the “roots” as tiny as possible.
#5 spread your clump along the hairline in a straight line leaving about 1/8 inch of the hair laying past your hairline. You want to leave room but not too much room so when you use your tool it will push the ends of the hair into the scalp and not leave a bunch of short hairs poking out. Gently push the hair into the scalp using your rooting tool.
#6 continue rooting your hair along the hair line making sure to smooth the holes as you go. You want the holes to be invisible with only the hair showing.
#7 once you have your hairline all you have to do is fill it in. I always work the front first then move to the back. I pay more attention to where the fairy will have her hair part and add a few random hairs along her forehead so she doesn’t have a perfectly straight hairline. Make sure you close those holes!
#8 keep working round and round until she has all her hair. Watch how much hair you use. It’s easy to overdo it and in the end you have a doll with a ton of hair – so keep those hair roots extra small!
Finished! Except for styling of course!
